Your computer's registry is the central 'database' for your entire Windows system. Not only does it store all your settings, but it also contains files and records which your computer relies on to operate. If it loses any of these files, it either crashes or runs VERY slow whilst trying to find them.

That's the cause of most computer malfunctions, by the way. It's like a "silent assassin" - the Windows registry just keeps getting more and more blocked up and confused... until eventually, it takes your computer so long to find ANYTHING that it's just not worth using any more.

Now, to get around this is actually pretty simple. You just need to make sure your computer's "core" files are all in order. You need to make sure your computer can easily find what settings it wants in a simple and easy fashion. To do this for free, you just got to do 3 things:

1. Un-Install unwanted programs

Un-Installing programs not only removes their files, but also relieves the strain on your hard drive. This is a great way to speed up your PC because it removes files which your computer will only have to scan every time it's switched on AND it removes registry values which might be corrupted. To do this, just click on START -> CONTROL PANEL -> ADD / REMOVE HARDWARE... and then you can check out the various programs you have and un-install them

2. Delete unwanted files

There's nothing worse for a computer than having a multitude of files stored on your hard drive. It's okay if you *need* the files, but if you've got a bunch of funny images / things which you have saved out of boredom, then it would be better for you to delete them.

3. Use an official Registry cleaner

These programs ARE commercial (they cost money) but they are free to try. All you need to do is download one (I'll show you which in a second) and then run it on your PC. It will scan through your registry and correct any corrupted files you may have. This is pure gold because it goes through your computer automatically, allowing you to concentrate on more important things.
